Hey, we like free stuff too...

Ah, another Microsoft product launch, and another almost too good to be true giveaway. Simply visit http://www.powertogether.com/ , watch a few informative webcasts or do a few handy virtual lab training sessions, and hey presto, free copies of Vista and Office 2007.......

....Ah-ha, but check the smallprint, and you'll find that you need to live in North America to apply (US/Canada/US Military airbases are typically the only allowable entrants) , as clearly the rest of the world would regard free software as the equivalent of a slap in the face. It would be bad enough if this was a once off, but this is clearly a matter of policy, as the same happened for vs.net (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vbasic/ms789057.aspx ), and asp.net 2.0 (http://www.learn2asp.net/campaign.aspx) amongst others. This time I notice that even the Canadians have been banished ("and is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States (includes District of Columbia) "), I wonder if my favorite moose-loving Microsoftie can explain what the Canadian's have done lately to be be added to the freebie blacklist like us Europeans?

Gravatar Heya Cathal -- obviously this is frustrating to those of us living on the rest of the planet (the Canadian bits and otherwise). I wouldn’t know the specifics of the powertogether.com case, but probably these promotions came out of the budgets from the local subsidiaries, and so therefore they were constrained to their local dev/IT Pro/whatever audiences.

Even if that's the case, and therefore I can understand why the Microsofties who made those decisions chose to add these provisos, I still completely appreciate how silly/frustrating these decisions can seem. Paticularly with a webcast, which can't help but get hits internationally.

To mention a local event with free swag, we're giving away stuff along the lines you mention in this mail to the attendees at the Microsoft Ireland launch of Vista, 2007 Office System and Exchange 2007 on December 5th (now booked out). For us, this is somewhat self-selecting, in that most of our visitors will be from the geography we cover out of Dublin (Ireland and Northern Ireland). If anyone else is dedicated enough to reach Dublin from somewhere off the island (note: see my previous blog post for flying caveat), then, fair play to those travellers, and Microsoft Ireland will happily give the swag.

I’ll see if I can contact the team who built powertogether.com and find out the specific story here... forgive me if I am not particularly responsive until after the 5th though...

Gravatar thanks Rob, i'm sure that's the case, just blowing off a bit of steam. I'll raise it in the next UK MVP meeting I attend and see if I get any clarification.
